WhatsApp New Rules Explained by IT Minister of India

IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday that WhatsApp users have nothing to fear about the new social media rules, which are designed to prevent misuse and misuse of the platform, and provide users with a strong grievance redressal Provide the platform.

He said that the new IT rules required social media companies to set up a Grievance Redressal Officer, Compliance Officer and Nodal Officer in India, to provide a platform for millions of users of social media to redress it.

The obligation to reveal the originator of an offensive message already in vogue is only related to the crimes related to India's sovereignty, integrity and security, public order, rape and child sexual exploitation.

"That too when other less intrusive measures are not effective," the minister said.

The government strongly defended its new digital rules on Wednesday, stating that messaging platforms such as WhatsApp's requirement to disclose the origin of flagged messages did not violate privacy, and demanded compliance reports from large social media firms.

The new rules, announced on 25 February, require large social media platforms - defined as more than 50 million users in the country - to be extra cautious, including the appointment of Chief Compliance Officer, Nodal Contact Person and Resident Grievance Officer For the sake of sitting.

New, stricter rules for social media firms require them to remove any content flagged by the authorities within 36 hours and establish a strong grievance redressal mechanism with an officer based in the country.

Important social media companies must publish a monthly compliance report detailing the complaints received and action taken, as well as actively removed content. They will also be required to publish a physical contact address in India on their website or mobile app, or both.

Under rules that make digital giants more accountable for content hosted on their platforms, companies must remove posts showing nudity or morphed photos within 24 hours of receiving a complaint.

These platforms will have to lose their intermediary status as a result of not complying with the new IT rules which gives them immunity from liabilities on any third party data hosted by them. In other words, they may be liable for criminal action in case of complaints.

Twitter has expressed concern over the "use of intimidation tactics by police" in a statement on Thursday, when the micro-blogging platform manipulated a media tag to a tweet by a BJP leader. Twitter said it is concerned about the "potential threat" to its employees and freedom of expression in India.
